Current Knight Carey Drafted by Atlanta in 24 DraftTuesday, July 16, 2024 By: Dan Allison | Silver Knights media relations For the sixth time in Franchise history, a currently rostered Silver Knight has been selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Owen Carey, the Londonderry native headed to his first year at Rutgers University, was chosen by the Atlanta Braves in the 15th round. Carey joins a 2024 Silver Knight draft class with three former players, bumping up the franchise total for players drafted/signed to the MLB to 40. Carey is also the second Silver Knight to be selected by Atlanta with the first coming in last year’s draft via 2020 Knight and Kansas State’s Brady Day, who was selected by the Phillies this weekend after returning to KSU last year. An MLB draft selection can be added to Carey’s long resume that he has been adding to this summer. A surefire pick for the 2024 All-Star Game down in Norwich, Carey is in the top five for HRs and RBIs across the league. His four homers put him tied for second, with his team-best 24 RBI giving him fourth. Carey’s .308 average is also good for seventh-best in the Futures League. At 17 years old, Carey is the youngest Silver Knight to be drafted since 2021’s Jackson Linn who was drafted by the Houston Astros out of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Carey was the only New England high-schooler to be selected in this year's draft. The “Summer Knights” Podcast had a chance to talk with Carey earlier in his first season of summer ball, getting to pick his brain about his game and the road ahead of him. “Helping me get at-bats, seeing harder pitching. Being around college guys. Everyone is good here, so it helps,” Carey said on the topic of Nashua preparing him for the future. “This (The Futures League) is gonna help.” And help it did. Whether in New Jersey or Georgia, the Nashua Silver Knights want to wish the best for Owen and his future endeavors as we continue to watch him shine at Historic Holman Stadium. |
