A Nashua team that ended June on a hot streak found themselves with tough luck to open July. After a 1-4 start to the month, the Knights looked for a rebound but were blocked quickly by Saturday’s opposition as the Bravehearts delivered a 15-run performance. Six runs in the eighth and ninth combined helped Nashua crawl closer, but the Worcester onslaught was too much in the 15-10 loss.

It started in the first for Worcester, with the ‘Hearts getting to Nashua starter in Colby’s Derek Woods. Two three-run innings in the first and third catapulted the Bravehearts to an early lead with Woods earning the loss in three and ⅔ frames.

Nashua fought back to start although, with two runs in the second and one in the third to keep the Knights within arms reach. Endicott’s James Benestad delivered his first and second RBIs of the season on base knocks in both frames. Another run came across via a walk from Rutgers’ Owen Carey, as the game sat at 6-3 after four.

About halfway through the matchup, the Bravehearts kept applying pressure in what was their final push needed to take the game away. Errors once again were a thorn in Nashua’s side with six errors from the Knights leading to Braveheart runs. Worcester scored nine in the fifth through the eighth, almost on the verge of a mercy rule win in another tough night for the Knights’ pitching staff.

Errors finally flipped to Nashua’s side in the later stages, with Worcester coughing up some runs via wild pitches and misplays in the field as three of the six late Knights runs came unearned. Three in the ninth brought Nashua within five for the first time since the fourth, but it was “too little too late” with the Knights dropping their fourth straight game.

On a tough skid to lead off July, Nashua will close out their week with a trip to Norwich on Sunday. First pitch between the Silver Knights and Sea Unicorns is set for 4:00 PM.
