Vermont Squeezes by Knights in Slugfest 13-9Another high-scoring affair occurred at Holman Stadium on Saturday night, but it did not land in the Silver Knights’ favor this time around. In a fever dream of a game, the Lake Monsters posted four runs in the eighth to pull away from Nashua. Saturday night’s battle included 29 combined hits and four lead changes, with Vermont delivering the final blow. There was no shortage of offensive action between the two squads, with a run or more scoring in 12 of the 18 half innings. Regardless, it was a night the Silver Knights should have positioned for the win column as errors and runners left on base came back to haunt them. Nashua and Vermont’s boxing match began right out of the gates, with 11 combined runs coming across in the first five innings. Both starters in Colby’s Derek Woods and Clarkson’s Cole Riskin did not make it to the fourth inning in an offensive clinic from both sides. A two-RBI single from Bryant’s Eliot Medlock and an RBI knock from Rutgers’ Owen Carey got the scoring going for Nashua, but a four-run third-inning from Vermont with help from Cornell’s Mark Quatrani’s slamming a three-run homer off the left-field foul pole kept the Lake Monsters out in front. Through five, it was 6-5 VT. After trading one-run innings back and forth, Nashua finally created space on the scoreboard with a four-run sixth to make it 8-7. SNHU’s Nater Wachter headlined the frame with a two-RBI double, as Siena’s Jeff Valdez added an RBI knock of his own. Stonehill’s Frankie Melendez took over on the bump, with Nashua nine outs away from a weekend sweep. Vermont, with their relentless lineup, took the lead right back with four runs coming across. Nashua cut it down to 11-9 in the bottom of the frame but runs in the eighth and ninth for VT allowed them to pull away with the victory. In a tough night for the Knights, Nashua will look to get the sour taste out of their mouth with a Sunday afternoon home matchup against Norwich. Nashua and the Sea Unicorns are set for 3:00 PM. |
