Quiet Bats, Bees Swarm Knights 5-1

New Britain. Vermont. Vermont. Nashua’s next three games would be their biggest of the month, with all three against the teams boxing them out of the playoff race. After a quiet loss to Norwich at Holman, the Knights looked to reignite last weekend's fire with a trip to face the Bees.

Alas, the Knights bats could not get rev back up in a one-run performance that gave New Britain a 5-1 win.

Nashua, who had two nine or more run ball games last week, has now only scored four runs in their last 18 innings. Despite out-hitting the Bees 6-4, the Knights left nine on base in what hindered any chance at their first win of the week.

New Britain opened the scoring with a bang via a two-run homer from UCONN’s Gabriel Tirado in the third. Aside from the blast, Pace’s Vinny Civitella was quality on the bump for the Knights with only two hits in four innings pitched.

Rutgers’ Owen Carey broke the drought for the Knights in the fifth, posting an RBI single to make it 2-1. Carey’s knock gives the Londonderry graduate four straight games with a hit and an RBI, hitting two home runs in that span. Carey added another hit on the night to continue his inferno of a stretch at the plate.

New Hampshire’s Scarlet Knight could not save the Silver Knights although, with the fifth-inning run being the lone score for Nashua on Thursday. Salve Regina’s James Tobin went five strong innings for the Bees in a complete night from their pitching staff.

Hopes remained intact for the red and black as it was 2-1 into the eighth. Keene State’s Phil Nichols got the ball in the second-to-last frame, but the Bees quickly swarmed. A three-run frame just about put things out of reach for the Knights with Tirado adding another RBI to give him a three-RBI night.

Now dropping their last two, the Knights will return to Historic Holman Stadium for a full weekend home slate. Vermont will head into town for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday, with first pitch for the Silver Knights and Lake Monsters set for 6:00 PM on Friday night.
