Silver Knights Spring Round Up

10 members of the 2021 Silver Knights roster took the field in week three of the College Baseball season.

VCU: The Rams were perfect 4-0 this week, sweeping VMI and winning their matchup against Central Michigan. Freshman shortstop, Connor Hujsak, has become a staple in the VCU offense. He registered a hit in each of the team’s 4 games, one of them being a solo home run, the first of his collegiate career. Hujsak has now started 8 games and is hitting .276 with 4 extra base hits and 4 RBI.

UMass: The Minutemen kicked off their season taking on the Northeastern Huskies. Ryan Coleman got the start in the outfield, going 0-1 with a walk in the season opener. Umass dropped their opening day game before turning around and sweeping a double header against Stony Brook three days later.

Northeastern: Covid Freshman Wyatt Scotti got the ball for the first time in his collegiate career this past week. He got the start against UMass and did not waste the opportunity, chucking 4 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just 1 hit, and striking out 5. He picked up the win in his first collegiate start, and also struck out future teammate Ryan Coleman from UMass, giving Silver Knight pitchers a 2-0 advantage on Silver Knight hitters this spring.

Maryland: The Terps came out of the gates in 2021 with a 4-game conference series against Michigan State. Third Baseman, Matt Orlando, got the start for 3 of the 4 games in the series. The Terps lost 3 of the 4 games to Sparty.

Merrimack: Three Silver Knights arms saw action in Merrimack’s opening series vs. the UMaine Black Bears. In game 1 in was Timmy Kalantzakos who got the ball first out of the bullpen. Kalantzakos went 1.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 1 hit, and striking out 2 batters in his outing. In the final game of the series, it was 2020 FCBL Champion Jake Thibault, that got the start. Thibault also went 2 innings, allowing 4 runs and striking out 1 Black Bear. LT Pare came out of the bullpen later in the game. UMaine won the series 3-1.

Penn State: Much like Maryland, the Nittany Lions opened with a 4 game conference series. Taking on Northwestern, Kyle Hannon got the start in left field in game 3 of the series. He made an outstanding debut going 2-4 with an RBI double and 2 runs scored. Penn State split the opening weekend series with Northwestern.

Elon: After dropping 2 of 3 games to UNC-Greensboro to kick off their season, Elon once again faced the Spartans in a 3-game series, just two weeks after their first matchup. In the final game of the series, Tristan Corcoran took the mound for his fourth appearance of the season. Corcoran tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out one batter. The Phoenix were swept by UNC-Greensboro, dropping their season record to 3-7. Corcoran currently sports a 3.18 era and opponents are batting just .211 when facing him.
