Knights Rally Falls Short

(Nashua, NH): The Silver Knights remain in search of their first victory of the summer (0-3) after a 6-5 loss against the 2-time defending champion Worcester Bravehearts. Pitching was again strong for Nashua as the staff only allowed three earned runs on Sunday afternoon.

Worcester started the scoring in the second inning, as Jack Gardner (Morehead State) singled and would later score on a Nick Martin (Westfield State) hit. Martin and PJ Barry (Saint Leo) would score after an error by the Knights defense, giving Worcester an early 3-0 lead, later extending the margin to 5-0 by the sixth inning.

Baseball is a sport where things change in the blink of an eye, and that is exactly what happened in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Knights came roaring back with five runs of their own to knot up the score. A trifecta of walks loaded the bases with nobody out, before Dylan Jones (Franklin Pierce) drew a walk of his own, scoring the first run. Nick Shumski (Merrimack) followed up with an RBI single to left field. Luke Beckstein (Kansas State) and Jack Arend (Nichols) both grounded out to second base, both plays scoring a run. Ben Rounds (Harvard) finished the inning with a single to left, scoring the Knights final run.

In the top of the ninth, Andrew Selima (Holy Cross) took a 3-1 pitch with two outs from Kyle Skidmore (Hofstra) over the left field wall to give Worcester the lead for good. The Knights would threaten in the ninth by pushing the winning run to second base, but it was too little, too late. Brendan Desaultels (Assumption) picked up the win for the Bravehearts, with Skidmore taking the loss for Nashua.

Nashua will continue to search for their first win of the young season as they hit the road for the first time on Tuesday evening in Brockton, MA against the Rox. The Silver Knights return to Historic Holman Stadium Wednesday evening at 6PM where they will face off with the New Britain Bees (1-1) for the first time.
