Loikits, Knights Win 11-3 With Monster Performance in Vermont

After a picturesque end to the Silver Knights’ summer at Historic Holman Stadium with a 14-4 win over New Britain, Nashua proved the high-scoring offensive performance was no home fluke with a monster outing in Vermont 11-3. It marks the third time this season the Knights have tallied double-digit runs in back-to-back games as they now hold a three-game win streak heading into the season finale.

It was Nashua’s “Murderer’s Row” that was the difference in Saturday’s matchup, with three of the top four hitters each recording three hits. Central Michigan’s Drew Loikits was the star with three RBI to go with his three-hit night, with SNHU’s Shane McNamara and Richmond’s Brady O’Brien each adding RBIs in their three-hit games.

One-run knocks from McNamara and Minnesota’s Jake Elbeery started the night off for Nashua 2-0, but Vermont responded with a harder punch via two runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The offensive explosion wasn’t until the seventh when the Knights put up a devastating seven-run frame.

On the bump, Saint Anselm’s Andrew Chenevert made his final start of the season. Coming off a five-inning outing in his home finale a week ago, the 2023 FCBL all-star put up a three-hit, two-earned run performance in four innings. In a close ballgame for the majority of the night, weight rested heavily on the Nashua bullpen’s shoulders.

Assumption’s Mike Crowley and Johnson & Wales Ben Fosberg, both coming off tough outings, used that weight on them as a chip on the shoulder with the two arms combining for four shutout innings. Fosberg allowed just one hit in his two frames of work, with Crowley striking out three as he earned the win.

While the top half of the Knight lineup filled the stat sheet, it was the bottom half that put the finishing touches on the victory. With Northeastern’s AJ Aschettino setting the table out of the seven spot with two hits, Endicott’s James Benestad and Rutgers’ Evan McCoach each recorded an RBI to put the Lake Monsters to rest.

Lehigh’s Liam O’Hearen closed the door in the ninth to seal the 11-3 victory, with Nashua now scoring 25 runs throughout the last two games.

Tomorrow will be the final game of the 2024 season for the Silver Knights. While a playoff berth is out of the picture, there are still plenty of headlines to watch out for.

Shane McNamara, the four-year Silver Knight, now sits at 99 RBI in his career with his RBI knock tonight. He will look for the elusive number 100 tomorrow in VT, potentially being just the third player ever to reach the triple-digit mark.

Keene State’s Tommy Ahlers has tied the Silver Knight franchise record for stolen bases in the past week, now with 26 swiped bags on the year. If he gets aboard tomorrow night, watch out for the cleats to be in motion.

Nashua and the Lake Monsters are set for a 5:05 PM first pitch on Sunday.
