Sitting at 0-3 against the Lake Monsters on the season, the Silver Knights freed themselves from their Vermont woes with a 2-1 victory on Independence Day.

Nashua was led to victory behind the arm of Northeastern’s Michael Gemma, tossing five hitless innings in his Fourth of July start. Gemma racked up seven strikeouts, earning his first winning decision of the summer.

After Gemma’s flawless five, Northeastern’s Ryan Griffin took over. His college teammate breezed through the sixth before getting into a jam in the seventh. Vermont would push one across in the seventh before Assumption’s Alex Meesig got the Knights out of the inning.

At the dish, the Knights' offense looked refreshed after two days off. Nine hits on the day for Nashua with five of them coming from the one through four hitters. Three Silver Knights posted two-hit days, with Northeastern’s Nate Lam leading the charge from the nine spot with two hits, two stolen bases, and an RBI.

With the game at 2-1 heading into the eighth, Nashua turned to their stud in the bullpen in SNHU’s George Welch. Welch made quick work of Vermont in the eighth, keeping the momentum in the ninth with two strikeouts in the frame. Welch’s six-out save marks his third save of the season, his first since June 17th.

Nashua’s staff combined for 11 strikeouts, only giving up two hits on the day. Behind their lockdown performance and efficiency at the plate, Nashua was able to cap off their holiday with their second straight victory.

Following their first victory versus the second-place Monsters, Nashua will hit the road on Wednesday before coming back for a two-game homestand. Brockton and the Silver Knights are set for a 6:30 PM first pitch on the fifth.
