Nashua Splits Worcester Doubleheader 11-2, 4-2

Sunday afternoon held a little bit of everything for the Silver Knights as they headed down to Worcester for Nashua’s first doubleheader of the summer. Coming off a big win in New Britain, the Knights turned their momentum into an 11-2 game-one victory before running out of steam in a 4-2 game-two loss.

Nashua’s offense was a sight to see in the first game of the day, posting double digits for the first time in 2024. Keene State’s Tommy Ahlers and Lehigh’s Andrew Noone both contributed two RBIs in a six-RBI performance from the Knights’ heart of the order.

Stonehill’s Nate Kearney led the charge for the bottom of the order, posting three hits and an RBI from the eighth spot. Albany’s Derek Finlay and Northeastern’s Will Fosberg put together multi-hit games in front of Kearney, with Siena’s Jeff Valdez adding an RBI in the nine-hole.

An eight-hit, two-RBI day from Nashua’s six through nine hitters left a big impact on the scoreboard. A section of the Knights lineup that had been struggling to produce so far this season stepped up in a major way.

Saint Anselm’s Andrew Chenevert, with run support in bulk, pitched well in his third outing as he earned the win. Chenevert tossed five shutout innings with four strikeouts.

After a tough start to the week, Nashua was on the verge of stringing together three straight to cap off their intro to June.

Game Two

A Knights offense that was boisterous in their last 16 innings quickly faded away in the second game of the day at Fitten Field. Nashua put up only five hits, leaving 11 on base in the process.

Pace’s Vinny Civitella got the start for the Knights in his third appearance of the summer. Civitella got by with two earned in four innings, needing the offense to wake up for a chance at a third straight win.

Quinnpiac’s Ray McNaught and Harvard’s Owen Tahnk opened the game for Worcester with a combined three hitless innings out of the gate. Nashua put two aboard via an error and hit by pitch, setting up Clark’s Ryan Caulfield to break the zero in the hit column with a single in the fourth.

Southern New Hampshire’s Anderson Moreno brought home a run on a productive out to make it 2-1 after four. With the lead cut to one, Worcester added runs in the fifth and sixth to try and pull away from the Knights.

Despite the lack of offense, Nashua still had a fair share of chances in this one. A two-out walk from Clark’s Ryan Caulfield and a single from Pace’s Ben Tullo in the sixth set up Anderson Moreno to cash in on his first Nashua hit to load the bases.

With the tying run standing on second, Albany’s Derek Finlay sent a bounding ball over to short that potentially could have caused trouble. Alas, Hofstra’s Michael Brown fielded it cleanly and flipped it to second for a force out to evade the threatening Knights.

An RBI knock from UMass Lowell’s River Hart brought the Knights within two again in the seventh, but it was too late for a rally as Worcester closed the door for the 4-2 victory.

Even while ending the week with a loss, the Silver Knights rallied back from some tough losses to put together a 3-3 week. On a better track after a 1-6 start, Nashua will look to continue their climb on the standings in week number three.

After the off day on Monday, the Silver Knights will welcome the Road Warriors to Holman for the first time in league history. First pitch between Nashua and the Warriors on Tuesday is set for 6:00 PM.
