The Nashua Silver Knights traveled to Billy Bullens Field in Westfield on Monday morning and were blanked 4-0 by the Starfires, with Josh Mayo throwing the first complete game shutout in Westfield Starfires history.
Westfield got on the board in the first inning on a Will Briggs RBI single to score Jamison Howland, then added two more in the third on a Trent Jenks RBI single, making it 3-0. The Starfires added an insurance run in the eighth on a JJ Fox sacrifice fly to put the game out of reach.
Mayo held the Knights to just 3 hits over 9 innings, walking two and striking out 6 in a dominant outing that marked a milestone for the Westfield franchise.
Malcolm Klingler (Northeastern) started for Nashua, allowing 3 runs over 3 innings. Declan Wilkes (Lehigh) was the bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing 3 scoreless innings in relief. Michael Cobb (Johnson & Wales) allowed one run in 1.1 innings before Colten Shaffer (Millersville) closed things out.
The Silver Knights fall to 5-7 as the Starfires improve to 5-6. Nashua returns home Tuesday night to host the Lowell Spinners at Historic Holman Stadium at 6:03 pm.
