The Nashua Silver Knights traveled to Vermont tonight, looking to get back on track admist their longest losing streak of the season. With the playoffs approaching, every game is key for Nashua as they look to raise their seventh banner in franchise history.
This one turned into a back-and-forth battle as the Silver Knights looked to make a statement up north. However, despite a hard-fought effort, Nashua ultimately came up just short as their losing streak extended to six games. The Vermont Lake Monsters edged out the Knights with a 3-2 win, continuing Nashua’s recent stretch of close but costly defeats.
Nashua’s pitching came to work in this ballgame; however, the offense would not be able to produce enough in the losing effort. Nigel Cross, who was pitching in his first game for Nashua, was able to give them a strong effort as he tossed 4 ⅔ innings while only giving up two runs to the Lake Monsters. They then put in Sam Franco, who was also pitching his first game for the team, and he did great, also. Franco would end up going 2 ⅓ innings while only giving up a run on a Tyler Harmony single.
The Nashua offense would give their pitching staff some help in the 5th as they were able to put the game’s first run on the board. Matt Jackson, who has been solid for Nashua since joining the team, singled in James Benestad on an error from the right fielder. Nashua would not score again until the 9th, where they started the inning down 3-1.
With their backs against the wall, the Knights rallied, trying to steal a win on the road. Brenden Walsh would get the inning started with a single, and he would later be driven in by Benestad to cut the lead to just one. Nashua would get the bases loaded with two outs; however, Vermont closer Sean Gamble was able to close the door as he got Patrick Shrake to ground out to end the game. The Knights out hit the Monsters in this game however it was just not enough in the end.
