Nashua Can't Complete Comeback
(Nashua, NH): As the schedule dwindles, wins and losses will begin to carry more weight. The Knights fell against Brockton on Sunday 10-9, while Worcester defeated Westfield, to increase their lead in the standings. With nine games to play, Nashua is 3.5 games ahead of Brockton and North Shore for the final championship spot. The game had the makings of a lot of offense, as it was 4-3 after two innings. Joel Lara (Franklin Pierce) singled and scored on a Jake Gelof (UVA) double, he also chipped in with a SAC fly in the second inning. The Knights took advantage of walks and hit batters, as they scored 4 runs with one hit, a Jack Arend (Nichols) RBI double. Brockton added 5 more in the 4th, highlighted by a Cal Christofori (Yale) home run, Joe Bramanti (Maine) 2-RBI double, and Pat Roche (Boston College) 2-run home run following Bramanti. Nashua got one back in the 5th as Dom Keegan (Vandy Boys) lead off the inning with a towering home run to center field, the deepest part of Holman Stadium. Offense would go quiet until the 8th, when Brockton added their 9th run, a JP Knight (Bryant) RBI single to score Bramanti. Nashua had their breakout inning in the bottom half, tying the game at 9 with 4 of their own. Troy Schreffler Jr. (Maryland) would score on a single by Jared Dupere (Northeastern), Nick Shumski (Merrimack) would score on a Dom Keegan Single to right field after singling himself. John Mead (Franklin Pierce) would follow up with a 2-RBI double to left field that scored Dupere and Keegan. Though, in the 9th, Griffin Young (Wheaton) gave up a leadoff double to Mara (4-5), who was pushed to third on a SAC bunt. He scored on a wild pitch with one out to give the Rox a 10-9 lead. Pitching was not the highlight in this game filled with offense. Both starters struggled to find the strike zone, but would not record decisions as the game came down to the final inning. An opportunistic win came for Mike Volgende (Tufts), who came on in relief for the 8th, giving up 4ER on 4H and 1K. Young was hit with the loss. He gave up 1ER on 1H and 1BB. Nate Tellier (UMass-Dart) got the save, pitching the 9th for the Rox. Now 18-12, a matchup with North Shore looms on Monday at Holman Stadium for the Knights, before a home-and-home with New Britain on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch from Nashua is at 6PM both Monday and Wednesday and 6:35 Tuesday against the Bees.
