By the age of 28, he had become the youngest Crew Chief to win a Winston Cup Race and a Winston Cup Title. Kirk Shelmerdine is best known for his record-breaking achievements while working as Crew Chief for Childress racing. Between 1986 and 1992, he lead Dale Earnhardt, Sr. to four Winston Cup Championships and won honors such as Mechanic of the Year and UNOCAL Pit Crew Race Competitions multiple times. His statistics include 246 top tens, 142 top fives, 14 pole positions and 46 wins. In 1992 Kirk Shelmerdine stunned the NASCAR community when he announced his retirement from the sport of racing. But, Kirk Shelmerdine's need for speed and the thrill of victory did not allow him to stay away from the sport he loved for long. After a single year of retirement, Kirk's dormant passion revived, compelling him to return to the racing circuit. He returned a more intense competitor and ready to tackle the sport from a different angle: Kirk intended to give driving his full attention proving that he was more than just a man behind the pit wall. Since1993, Kirk has amassed considerable driving experience in several NASCAR series, including NEXTEL Cup, Busch Grand National, Craftsman Truck and ARCA. Kirk Shelmerdine started his own NASCAR Team, KSR Racing in 2002. Currently, he is the only full-time owner and driver in the NEXTEL Cup series. Kirk Shelmerdine's ability to understand race cars and win races is rarely matched in the NASCAR community. He is one of the league's most exciting, experienced and well-rounded champions.
